Remember Moses and the rock that gave forth water? The Hebrews remember. By the days of Jesus, the memory of the miracle had evolved into an eight-day festival. Each morning a priest filled a golden pitcher with water from Siloam's pool and carried it through a people-lined path to the Temple. Commissioned by trumpets he encircled the altar with a libation of liquid. He did this every day, once a day for seven days. Then on the last day, the great day, the priest gave the altar a Jericho loop; seven circles, seven vessels of water.

It may have been at this very moment when the tanned pilgrim from the northlands requested their attention. "On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, 'If you are thirsty, come to me! If you believe in me, come and drink! For the Scriptures declare that rivers of living water will flow out from within.'" (John 7:37-38)
