Ernest Gordon groans in the Death House of Chungkai. How harsh the war has been on him. The prison camp has made barbarians out of the Allied soldiers. Gordon is happy to leave it. Death by disease trumps life in Chungkai. But then something wonderful happens. Two new prisoners, in whom hope still dwells, are transferred to the camp. The two heed a higher code of conduct. Rather than ignore their colleagues, they help them. They help Gordon. They cleanse his sores and massage his legs. They give him his first bath in six weeks. Slowly his strength returns and, with it, his dignity. Every so often, in the midst of the barbarism, there appears a person of beauty, of grace. A soul on whom love is not wasted.
