Henri Nouwen tells of a friend who had a little bird he kept in a cage. One morning he found the bird dead. Not wanting his son to see the lifeless bird he ran to the store and bought a new one. He did not want to have to tell his son we do not live forever. His action betrayed a common conviction: avoid facing death at all costs. God suggests a different approach to death- face it.
