01 The Luggage of Life - Traveling Light (MP3)

The first of an eleven part series about letting God bear your burdens.

Alarm clock, orange juice, toothbrush, hairbrush, feed the pets, feed the kids. "Come on, let's get of here. We're late." What does that sound like to you? It sounds like morning, doesn't it? It's not hard to find the common thread -- each of these phrases represents something we do to get ready in the morning. We all have our routines that get our day started. However, if you were to make a list of all the things you do in the morning, I think there's something you would forget.

I believe that all of us, every day, make a journey to the baggage terminal of life. We pick up our bags -- our burdens that we carry with us throughout the day. Some of us pick up the duffel bag of self-reliance, the suitcase of loneliness, the satchel of insecurity, the bundle of fear, or the heavy crate of wounds. Anxiety, doubt, dissatisfaction, weariness...we carry them all. It's no wonder we feel tired and unproductive. Return with me to the greatest piece of poetry ever penned, the 23rd Psalm, and let Jesus take the burdens you were never meant to carry.

The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in great pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul;
He leads me down paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For you are with me;
Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil.
My cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord
Forever.

The 23rd Psalm was written by a shepherd who became a king because he wanted us to know about a king who became a shepherd.

Date preached: April 19, 1998
