A few weeks ago, a friend gave me a jar of her homemade peach preserves. Few delicacies in life are superior to that of her peach preserves. Each spoonful is a celestial experience. The only problem with peach preserves is they don't last forever. I'm sorry to report that the bottom of my jar is in sight. The moment will soon arrive when my spoon will clink against the glass and I'll scoop peach preserves one final time. To be quite honest, I'm dreading that moment. Each bite is bittersweet -- sweet with flavor but bitter with the reminder that I'm running out of peach preserves!

My friend's husband, however, has no such problem. He gets all the peach preserves he wants. The clink of the spoon at the bottom of the jar doesn't bother him. He has a pantry full of preserves. Not me; I have only one jar. And it is nearly empty. So what's the difference between me and my friend's husband? He is part of the family and family members get special treatment. Those who are in God's family get special treatment as well. Listen to the words of David: "My cup overflows with blessings" (Psalm 23:5 LB).

1. A cause of anxiety: Most good things don't last forever.
